These pages use Bitstream dynamic fonts. These can be displayed by almost all versions of Netscape since about 4.02 except for some Unix versions (including Linux and OSF). Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 and 5 for Windows can also display these fonts, but IE for other platforms cannot.
If you browser falls into one of the above categories and you still cannot see the Icelandic characters, try holding down the shift key and pressing the 'Reload' button. If that still doesn't work, download and install the fonts. (see below).
Some versions of Netscape (since about 4.5 on Windows 95 and some Unix platforms) don't display Dynamic Fonts very well - characters overlap and it can look a bit ugly. BitStream has released an updated version of the font displayer that seems to overcome these problems - Click here to download the font displayer for Netscape for Windows or the Mac, and then install it. Alternatively, Windows users can install and use Internet Explorer instead of Netscape. For Unix platforms which suffer from this problem (notably Solaris), I have no solution to the problem at this stage.
If your browser can use Cascading Style Sheets (Netscape and IE since about version 4) but cannot use dynamic fonts (or cannot display them), you can install the fonts locally:
The look of the document is controlled by Cascading Style Sheets (see the links page). If you have a pre-version 4 browser, you'll probably find that the pages look a bit ugly and the Icelandic characters are not properly displayed (notably, ö is used for o-ogonek, and on Macs, ‘th’ for thorn, ‘dh’ for eth and ‘y’ for y-acute). There is not much I can do about the characters - they simply cannot be displayed by older browsers.
