Essay question: What are the advantages and disadvantages of federalism? Has it outlived its usefulness in Australia?

Synopsis: The Federal System has three main advantages. Firstly, it is argued that the states are closer to the poeple and therefore are able to provide their citizens needs. Secondly, what the distribution of power gurantees a decentralised development and lastly the division of power is a safeguard against tyranny, in effect producing political stability. The disadvantages can also be grouped into three main catergories for convenience. Firstly, the weakness in the home government and defficient authuority. Secondly, dissolution by rebellious states. Lastly, trouble expense and delays that occurs with complex system of legislation and administration that we have adopted. When looking specifically at the Australian Federal System it is obvious that the advantages no longer exist and the advantages are overweighed by the numerous disadvantages. lt is truly time for Australia to make major reforms for it to remain an effective governmental process.
