Logical Relations in Texts 3

In ENGL 1000 you will learn not only to critique and edit texts like this, but also to use different kinds of logical resources appropriately. Some of these are:

  • conjunctions: 'and', 'if ... then', 'however', 'meanwhile' ...
  • grammatical metaphors for logical relations, for example verbs like 'resembles', 'results in', forms' ...

You will also learn language to help you analyse and describe major types of logical relations in natural language

  • elaborating an initial idea by further specifying it or by providing examples
  • representing causes, consequences, conditions and complex time sequences
  • extending on an idea by introducing an additional or alternative proposition

The lectures, WebCT activities and practical work in seminars are co-ordinated to give you in-depth knowledge on this topic.
