Describing English Grammar: Basic Concepts

Here are three modules which introduce you to some basic concepts in English grammar: parts of speech, groups and phrases and subject and predicateEach module includes brief explanations, a range of examples and some practice exercises.

The modules have been written for people who are very inexperienced in describing grammar and who need basic information for their studies or workplace. The modules are concerned only with grammatical description, not with ‘rules’ of grammar for standard written English. For information on those matters you should consult a style guide.

The order in which you study the modules is important . You should approach them in the order listed above because concepts in the second and third depend on information about parts of speech.

The English Department offers advanced units of study in English grammar, particularly its uses in the study of texts. For more information go to Undergraduate Units of Study descriptions.
