2014: AUSTRALIAN SOCIAL HISTORY, 19192000
The University of Sydney History Department
Semester 1, 2004
The twentieth century has seen major transformations
in Australian society. From the aftermath of the Great
War, the course follows the traumas of Depression and
World War II, into periods of less dramatic but still
profound change: post-war boom through the Menzies years,
threats posed by the Cold War, the Bomb and the discovery
of the teenager, the impact of immigration, the 1960s,
the Whitlam government, the Hawke-Keating years and
life in the 1980s and 1990s. Through a survey of those
years, the course seeks to reach some historical understanding
of the issues which confront Australians today.
