WEEK 12 TUTORIAL: People and Place

(31 May – )

Tutorial question

What has been the relationship between race, conservation and economic growth in shifting attitudes to immigration and the environment in Australia since 1980?

Account for the growth in environmentalism since the 1960s. Has opposition to immigration been more a product of racism or a recognition of the limits of the Australian environment? What are the similarities and differences between environmental and historical conservation? How do attitudes to both immigration and the environment relate to traditional patterns in Australian attitudes? Which social groups align with which sides of recent debates about immigration and the environment? What has been the impact of the Greens, and who do they represent? What is happening to the Australian population today? To the environment? What is the solution? How do you account for the apparent political success of policies targeting refugees and boat people?
