WEB LINKS

The following web links were compiled for Australian Cultural History 2004 by Mischa Barr. The links are divided into general research links and more specific areas derived from the seminar topics.

An asterisk (*) denotes a particularly useful website; two asterisks (**) indicate a super website.

General Australian History Research Links

NOTE: Many of these ‘general’ sites link to each other, so that searching can be rather circular.

The National Library of Australia - www.nla.gov.au:

State Libraries:

Universities:

Museums:

Archives:

Historical Organisations, Associations etc:

Other Useful Databases, Websites etc:

Journals:

NOTE: Many journal websites only have abstracts of articles from back issues online. The best to access online journal articles through Sydney Uni Library: SETIS or Expanded Academic Index.

Cultural Contact

NOTE: See also: 'On the Margins'

Landscape

The Home

NOTE: This was a difficult topic to find online resources for. Many of the links are on very specific issues /political and may not be very useful.Additionally, there are numerousfamily histories on the web (just type ‘family’ into a search engine!)

Shakespeare in Australia

Melbourne

Sport and Popular Culture

NOTE: Obviously there are a lot more ‘popular culture’ sites out there than are listed here.Students are advised to do their own searches on more specific topics within ‘popular culture’ (such as ‘radio’, ‘cinema’ etc).

See also: ‘Hollywood and Americanisation’

Food

NOTE: Several of these websites include links to old recipe books.

The City

NOTE: See also ‘Melbourne’

Bohemianism and Respectability

School

Things

NOTE: For museum websites, see 'General' section

Body at the beach

NOTE: It can be difficult to find sources on the ‘body’ as many search results returned are ‘adult’ sites and women’s magazines.

Body at war

Norman Lindsay

Belief

Hollywood and Americanisation

NOTE: Some of these links are also relevant to ‘Sport and Popular Culture’.

Political Cultures

Overseas

Suburbia

NOTE: There are many local histories on different suburbs.

The Car

NOTE: These are only a few links relevant to motor transport that were encountered in connection with the other research topics. Specific research on ‘the car’ would yield further resources.

On the Margins

NOTE: There are thousands of sites on Aboriginal and multicultural Australia — this is a very small selection, divided into different topic areas.

Searching for terms such as "migrant"/"immigrant"/"immigration", "multicultural"/"multiculturalism", "ethnic", "racism", "White Australia", "cultural diversity", "refugees" and the names of specific ethnic groups, etc. would produce many more search results.

Most libraries and archives have Aboriginal/Indigenous and Immigrant/Multicultural Australia etc. Collections. Students should search these individually.

Aboriginal/ Indigenous Sites:

Immigrants/ Multicultural Australia:

** Useful Links from the PL Duffy Resource Centre
