CALLOUS BYSTANDERS?

From November 24 1942 news of Hitlers plans to exterminate European Jews was
freely available to anyone in the US concerned about their plight. Yet a US Treasury
Department report alleges that the US State Department spent much of 1943 not
only bystanding as the Nazis carried out Hitler's plans, but also sabotaging nascent
plans to rescue some of Europe's persecuted Jews. This website features this document
as well as material to help place it in context. Visitors are encouraged to critically
engage with the material and to send their interpretations of the material presented
here. Thoughtful interpretations will be posted on an 'interpretations' page. Given the
gravity and complexity of the issues canvassed visitors are recommended to make
multiple visits to the site.
