Although Billy Graham writes
of Nixon's "trademark thumbs-up signal", the reality
is that this gesture appeared most often when Nixon faced defeat.
Particularly at his last press conference before resigning
as President, Nixon often used this gesture as a symbol of defiance
and determination to climb back against all the odds.
While Nixon's use of it on his deathbed is open to interpretation,
it indicates that he felt this was far from his final battle.
