Race, Empire and Bondage I

This course will take a transnational approach to questions of race and sexuality in the British empire from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries. We will focus on the experiences, culture and resistance of men and women engaged in bonded labour (slaves, convicts and indentured labourers) in three key areas – the Caribbean, South Africa and Australia. We will also explore the reasons for changing colonial labour policies during the heyday of British industrialisation and imperialism.
