Today we live in an "Information Age" where computer-based information technologies, from the Internet and e-commerce to virtual reality and computer games, have revolutionised the way we live, work, communicate and entertain ourselves. In this unit of study we will closely examine the political, historical, social, cultural and aesthetic dimensions of this information revolution.

The aim of this course is to develop the critical, communicative and evaluative tools we need to use as participants, critics and professionals in the information age
In this unit of study, we will:
- explore the human contexts and uses of computer-based information systems
- encourage a human-centred approach to the study of human-technology interactions
- critically analyse the political, historical, social, cultural and aesthetic dimensions of information technologies and information systems
- Investigate specific case studies of computer-based technologies (e.g. virtual reality systems, cyborg technologies)
On successfully completing this unit students should be able to demonstrate:
- a human-centred approach to understanding the relationships between humans and technology
- a critical understanding of the political, historical, social and cultural dimensions of information systems and information technologies
- the development of independent learning and critical thinking
- oral and written communication skills
- research and inquiry skills, involving the ability to present evidence and argument in support of your own particular perspective
- information literacy, including the ability to recognise, locate, evaluate and use information in a range of contexts
